To book a private transfer: Istanbul Airport transfer

İstanbul Airport has welcomed over 200 million passengers annually at its massive Arnavutköy facility since 2019. However, the airport's roughly 40 km distance from the city centre raises an immediate question for visitors — especially first-timers: "How do I actually get into town?"

In this guide we compare the four main transport options — by price, travel time and comfort — so you can pick the one that suits your needs best.

Transport Options at a Glance

Private Transfer

A private transfer takes 45–75 minutes depending on traffic and offers a door-to-door service — the most comfortable option available. Your driver meets you at arrivals, handles your luggage, and the fare is locked in at booking. Even if your flight is delayed, no extra charges apply.

The top choice for families, business travellers and anyone with heavy luggage.

HAVAIST Buses

For budget-conscious travellers, HAVAIST buses run to various points across İstanbul in 60–90 minutes. Keep in mind, though, that you may face waiting times at intermediate stops, the hassle of hauling luggage on board, and crowded conditions during rush hours.

Metro + Connections

The M11 metro line takes you to Kağıthane, from where you can transfer to other lines to reach the city. Total journey time is around 90–120 minutes, and you may need multiple transfers. A reasonable choice for solo travellers on a tight budget who have plenty of time.

Taxi

Taxis offer flexibility, but fares can vary wildly depending on traffic density. Costs can spike during late-night hours and peak traffic. Be cautious of drivers who refuse to use the meter.

Which One Is Right for You?

Choose a private transfer if:

  • You are travelling with family or a small group
  • You have excess luggage or fragile items
  • You are arriving on a late-night flight
  • You are on a business trip and need to save time

Choose public transport if:

  • You are on a tight budget and travelling solo
  • Your luggage is light — a backpack or small carry-on
  • You have plenty of time and want to explore the city

Tips for Booking

Whichever mode of transport you choose, planning ahead — especially during summer and public-holiday periods — can unlock significant price advantages. Online transfer bookings offer extras such as instant confirmation, fixed-price guarantee and free cancellation.

In a dynamic city like İstanbul, choosing the right transport is the first and most important step of your journey. Pick the option that fits your needs and start your trip on the right foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Istanbul Airport sits in the Arnavutköy district on the European side of Istanbul, roughly 35 km from the city center. Journey times vary a great deal with traffic and with the neighborhood you are heading to, so it is worth planning your transport in advance.

You can reach Istanbul Airport on the M11 metro line. The line calls at stops such as Gayrettepe, Kağıthane, Kemerburgaz, Göktürk, Istanbul Airport, Taşoluk and Arnavutköy, and is about 42 km long in total. The ride from Gayrettepe to Istanbul Airport takes roughly 30 minutes. Services start at 06:00 and continue until 00:00 at night.

Because M11 metro services run between 06:00 and 00:00, the metro is not available for flights outside those hours. Late at night you can turn to HAVAİST buses, which serve areas including Taksim, Kadıköy and Beşiktaş 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, to an official taxi, or to a private transfer booked in advance. A private transfer is the predictable option at night, because it includes a meet-and-greet and takes you door to door.
